Imagine an auto car and a 5 speed Z, both with large turbos. It takes a bit of time for the turbos to respool after every shift. On an auto, the turbo spools up and stays spooled the entire time. The larger the turbos, the bigger the advantage the auto will have. Every time you shift, the manual will fall behind a little bit more. Now with an extra gear, you're going to lose a little more time shifting and respooling. Auto's put slightly less peak power to the wheels, but AVERAGE HP output is the name of the game.
